Between Seasons: How to Style Your Bed for the Late-Summer Shift

Late August occupies a beautiful, fleeting space on the calendar. The days are still bathed in summer heat, but the evening light begins to shift, casting longer, warmer shadows across the bedroom. It is that subtle pre-fall tease—the perfect moment to transition your sanctuary from the crisp, ultra-lightweight styling of mid-summer to a softer, more inviting aesthetic.

You don't need a complete overhaul to capture this transitional mood. With a few intentional layers and a shift toward richer, grounding hues, you can style a bed that feels perfectly in tune with the season. Here is our favorite styling direction for the late-summer shift.

1. Keep the Base Breathable

Even as we look toward autumn, August nights still require breathability. Start with a foundational layer of crisp cotton sateen or lightweight linen sheets in a soft neutral—think warm alabaster, ivory, parchment, or subtle oatmeal rather than stark white. This keeps the bed feeling fresh and temperature-regulated while softening the overall contrast. Beyond the beautiful foundations provided by our Premier, Meadow, and Savannah sheet sets, we also offer 100% cotton bed pillows, down comforters, mattress pads, and toppers to elevate your comfort. Many of our foundation pieces feature cooling technology to enhance the feel of your bed before the bedding is even placed.

2. Introduce the "Middle Weight" Layer

The secret to transitional styling is the middle layer. Fold your heavy winter duvet and store it a bit longer. Instead, drape a beautifully textured matelassé coverlet or a lightweight quilted blanket over your flat sheet. This provides just enough weight for those nights when the AC is running or a late-summer breeze rolls in, without the stifling heat of a heavy insert. Our current matelassé offerings include the Brisbane coverlet, but we also offer a stunning variety of coverlets and quilts to suit any preference. For natural cotton comfort, explore the Karalena, Mayfair, and Amherst quilts. If you prefer a touch of sheen, the Brilliance, Satinique, and Lyndon quilts provide a luxurious finish with intricate, rich quilting patterns. We also offer boldly colored options crafted from durable, easy-to-maintain fabrics that hold their rich hues beautifully over time.

3. Tease Fall with Color and Texture

This is where the magic happens. You can introduce the warmth of autumn without committing to heavy fabrics. Bring in a curated selection of decorative pillows and a draped throw blanket at the foot of the bed in deep, earthy tones. Think muted terracotta, rich mustard, burnt sienna, or a grounding olive green. Currently, our Nautical throw pillows and blankets are available in a beautiful range of coastal and fall colors. The effortless coordination these pieces exhibit across all our bedding collections is exactly why we design our products to bridge together, creating cohesive, transitional moments in your home.

Mixing textures is key to achieving that high-end, inviting look. Pair the smooth, cool touch of your sleeping pillows with a chunky-knit pillow. The juxtaposition of summer linens with a touch of pre-fall knit creates a bed that looks luxuriously layered and practically begs to be slept in.

4. The Imperfect Drape

While summer beds often look best tight and tailored, the late-summer shift calls for a slightly more relaxed, lived-in elegance. Instead of folding your throw blanket into a rigid rectangle at the foot of the bed, gently drape it off-center. Let the textures speak for themselves. You'll have guests wondering how you managed a designer look all by yourself.
